Project Déjà Vu (Canada, 2024): Toronto Police uncovered a scheme involving 680 synthetic identities used to open hundreds of bank and credit accounts across Ontario. The fraud resulted in $4 million in losses and facilitated money laundering and human trafficking—a chilling example of how identity manipulation intersects with broader criminal networks.
Oxford Synthetic Identity Ring (UK, 2024): A UK-based fraud ring created 150 synthetic identities to apply for over 450 lines of credit across multiple properties. Exploiting vacant buildings and intercepted mail, the group committed large-scale financial fraud by exploiting weak verification processes.
KnowBe4 Hiring Fraud (US, 2024): A North Korean threat actor, using a stolen U.S. identity and AI-generated video avatars, successfully infiltrated cybersecurity firm KnowBe4 by obtaining a remote IT role. The actor deployed malware on company devices, exposing critical systems—an alarming fusion of synthetic identity fraud and insider threat.
These cases demonstrate how synthetic identities are not just tools for credit card fraud—they are access points into financial systems, corporate networks, and national security infrastructure. Yet most cyber insurance policies remain silent or ambiguous on whether such AI-augmented fraud is covered.
